Un mondo in miniatura/Miniature World

A short passage from "Miniature World", taken from my collection "The Man Who Forgot To Die"

"...I cannot hate the snow, yet. I cannot see it as an enemy.
I get lost in the mysterious game of the falling flakes instead, moved gently by the light breeze.
I find myself thinking about their definite and precise structure, a miracle of aesthetics.
I see them quivering from my slightly foggy window panes and I am eager to get out and welcome them in my gloved hands. But I have learnt that I need to wait..."

Soggetti smarriti/Missing Subjects

A short passage from "Missing Subjects", taken from my collection "The Man Who Forgot To Die"

"...I still do not know where my disconnected wandering is taking me. I do not know which far-off destination I need to reach and why, but what I know is that was not my life, that was not what I had always dreamt it to be, that was not me. When I was younger, I used to think about my future life as an adult and I imagined it to be perfect, as a smoke ring escaped from the “O” of the lips, an elliptic square that welcomes your amazed look out of a narrow alley, in a medieval small village, an endless sea of sunflowers on a field..."

Una vita immaginaria/An Imaginary Existence

A short passage from "An Imaginary Existence", taken from my collection "The Man Who Forgot To Die"

"...when she put on the kimono, intentionally and sensually on her naked skin, she got lost in the mirrored figure in front of her, and fell in love with the familiar presence of that unknown twin sister. She wrapped herself in the cool embrace of the silk, tracing the outlines of the graceful embroidery with her fingertips, still wet and wrinkled because of the long permanence in the warm water of the bath, figuring out shapes and colours, with her eyes shut..."

L'odore delle cose/The Scent of Things

A short passage from "The Scent of Things", taken from my collection "The Man Who Forgot To Die"

"...we slowly walked along the well known path that would lead us home, stopping here and there, peeping at the cautious sneaking off of the stray cats in the courtyards, listening to the daily magic of birdsong in the branches, wondering at the unwary blooming of a new flower, from a crack on the steps in front of a church. And this shared walk, this rambling about the steep lanes that surrounded hidden gardens, filled with the perfume of tall magnolias, sounded each time more intimate and private, like a secret to be kept for ourselves, a languid memory resurfacing from the past of a very old man..."

A short passage from "Ophelia's Death", the opening short story from my collection "The Man Who Forgot To Die"

"...Ophelia’s body is floating on the soft velvet of the surface, held by a whimsical root that has caught hold of the barefoot young woman’s ankle. Ophelia drifts in the glare of a sudden light, slipped out of the careless cloud, pale and helpless creature, little fish with no tail and no gills, tied in seaweed and glistening with morning pollen..."

Pour the absinthe/Versa l'assenzio

POUR THE ABSINTHE                VERSA L'ASSENZIO

Don’t speak                                    Non parlare
Just fill the glass                               Riempi il bicchiere
And let the night come in                  E lascia entrare la notte

Pour the absinthe                             Versa l'assenzio
And rest your head                           E posa il tuo capo
On this empty table                          Su questa tavola vuota

Give me your hand                           Dammi la mano
And gently kiss goodbye                   E dai l'addio
To this world of ours                         A questo nostro mondo

Come with me                                  Vieni con me
Let’s cross the dreadful border          Attraversiamo il temuto confine
And leave the rest behind                   Lasciando dietro ogni cosa

Don’t be afraid                                  Non temere
There’s nothing here to fear                Non c'è nulla di cui aver paura
The mists will shroud us in                  Le nebbie ci avvolgeranno

Just pour the absinthe                         Versa l'assenzio
And rest your heavy head                   E riposa il capo pesante
Upon my shoulder, dear                      Sulla mia spalla, amore

Don’t speak,                                       Non parlare
Just fill the glass                                 Riempi il bicchiere
And let the night come in                  E lascia entrare la notte

L'idea/The Idea

L’IDEA                                                  THE IDEA

Ho coltivato un’idea                                 I have watered the idea
L’ho vista nascere                                    I have witnessed its birth
Insicuro germoglio                                    Unsure sprout
Di pensiero creativo                                  Of creative thought
Lontano dal comune sentire                       Far from commonplaceness
E poi crescere                                          I have seen it growing
Trepidante e impavida                              Quivering and fierce
Tra le spire delle erbacce                          Among the coils of weeds
Che tentavano di soffocarla                       That wanted to suffocate it
L’ho vista ergersi                                       I have seen it standing
Tronco possente e rami al cielo                  Powerful trunk and skyward branches
Incurante dei rombi di tuono                      Indifferent to the rolls of thunder
Delle tempeste delle mode                         To the tempests of passing fashion
L’ho vista sfidare                                       I have seen it challenging
Il sommesso mormorio della gente              The low whispering of people
Fiorire e dare frutti                                     Blooming and bearing fruits
Che hanno sfamato gli incerti                      That have fed the hesitant ones
Ho coltivato un’idea                                   I have watered the idea
Che adesso è seme muto                            Which is now the silent seed
Nel grembo fertile                                       In the fruitful womb
Di un giovane campo di grano                     Of a young field of wheat
Pane per un futuro oscuro ed affamato        Bread to an obscure, hungry future

June's Waves/Le onde di June

JUNE’S WAVES                                   LE ONDE DI JUNE

When she walked                                    Quando lei passeggiava
Through my lady’s garden                        Nel giardino della mia signora
Her voice was crystal clear                       La sua voce gentile
And gentle                                               Era puro cristallo
And the King of Rome                             E il Re di Roma
Was still up there                                     Volava alto in cielo
Singing its song of freedom                       Intonando il suo canto di libertà

She moved among men                             Si muoveva tra gli uomini
With flowers in her hair                             Con fiori tra i capelli
And the heather was high                          E l'erica era alta
Down the moors                                       Nelle brughiere
And the birds in the late autumn sky           E gli uccelli nel cielo d'autunno
Sang goodbye                                           Cantavano il loro commiato
When the night came in                              Alla sera che si avvicinava

When the band                                          Quando la band
Played that waltz in Lisbon                         Suonava quel valzer a Lisbona
Her love was still warm and tender             Il suo amore era soffice e caldo
Lost in the arms                                         Perduta tra le braccia
Of a dark-eyed sailor                                 Di un marinaio dagli occhi neri
She was riding the waves                            Lei cavalcava le onde
Of her Ocean                                             Del suo Oceano

Just putting her ship in order                       Preparando la barca
Ready to leave                                           Pronta a partire
For her beloved shores of Albion               Per le amate sponde d'Albione

Lily

LILY                                                          LILY

I hear your soundless steps                          Avverto il tuo passo silenzioso
Through my sleepless nights                         Nelle mie notti insonni
Can almost feel the warmth of your body     Riesco quasi a percepire il calore del tuo corpo
Next to mine on the bed                              Accanto al mio sul letto
But you are not here                                    Ma non sei qui
And yet you are near                                   E tuttavia vicina
My dear                                                      Mia piccola
I had to let you go                                        Ho dovuto lasciarti andare
The sky was getting dark                              Il cielo si faceva scuro
And everything was nothing                          E ogni cosa era niente
All the birds were silent on the trees             Gli uccelli erano silenziosi tra i rami
The night I let you go                                    La sera in cui ti lasciai andare
Alone, and yet with me                                 Da sola, e tuttavia con me
My dear                                                       Mia piccola
