Hibakusha

HIBAKUSHA

It was that day
When the aeroplanes darkened the sky
With their thundering, frightening flight
And the bomb dropped
Ripe, poisonous fruit
From the branches
Of unnaturally deadly trees

Suddenly, that blinding light
That sound
The sky was in a cloud
And hit by the flames they stood
Against a thousand Hokusaki waves
And all the colours of a little world
Melted into the dull shade of death
Before the innocent eyes of a child

It was the day
Her life turned into something else
A different form of existence
Thin skinned, painful and vulnerable
Covered in a million little tears

She looks old now
Tired, in the wrinkled yukata of her burning memories
But her eyes are the same frightened stars
That witnessed the explosion

Now I hold her hand in silence
Her tiny voice fills the emptiness of this room
And louder than a roaring crowd
It soars up
To touch the heart of an indifferent god
